Chapter 2: Dragon Slaying

Original Title: Level 24 in Iron Chain Slays Elvarg-- TWICE (pics)
Original Release: 12 Jan 2003 02:05

Many of you have read the beginning of Omegawytch’s story, wearing (borrowed!) rune at level 18 combat. A few of you may have plowed on to page 3, where I was accused of cheating, and page 4, where I responded with pictures. Here’s the rest of the story:

Wearing rune at 18 combat is nothing new; many have done it. Wearing rune plate at a low combat level, while also nothing new, has been accomplished by far fewer; o defense o not only did it, but documented it elegantly a few days ago.

I fished lobsters until I had 75 certs, then sold them for 75k gp. Then I fished lobsters until I had another 75 certs, reaching 50 fishing in the process; these I sold for somewhat more. This gave me the wherewithal to buy the necessary chaos runes– and to buy rune plate.

I smithed to level 15, so I could smelt the two iron bars for the Knight’s Sword quest. A dwarven stout let me make bronze legs, to go with the chain, large and kite I had already made. We don’t need no steenking rune armor to mine blurite…

Completing the quest gave me 10 additional smithing levels. I mined some more iron and superheated it, thus guaranteeing I wouldn’t fail to refine any of it. (It’s good to be a mage…) The smelting, and smithing an iron large, took me to 26 smithing, so I didn’t even need a stout to make iron chain.

The Oracle’s map piece and Wormbrain’s were trivial, but I packed carefully for Melzar’s Maze, planning to shoot Fire Strikes until the cheap mind runes ran out or until I reached the lesser, whichever came first.

As it turned out, I only had to use two or three Fire Bolts on Melzar.

The lesser cost me a couple more salmon than it should have, because I forgot to switch to Silverlight BEFORE retreating to eat on a couple of occasions. Still, I was never in any danger.

I did nothing on the first trip to Crandor but open the secret passage, insuring that I could return at will without fixing the boat again. I’ll spare you the screen shots; suffice it to say that it cost me only five salmon to run from skeletons, scorps, lessers, and red spiders, and 30 gp to return to Draynor to pack for dragon slaying.

I entered the dragon’s lair shortly after some poor unfortunate had died to the evil creature’s foul and fiery breath. The lessers had cost me only 5 hp on the way; I ate a lobster, giving me inventory space to grab a law rune.

The poor unfortunate apparently had done little or no damage to the dragon before being fried…

At this point, I can already sense fingers curling over keyboards, poised to type, “u cant mage dragon it shoots back youll get fried…” Sut Those Fingers Up. Yeah, the dragon shot back, each time I cast a spell. It did 2 damage to me each time, with a very rare 3 or a very rare 1 to break the monotony of the routine: Cast six Fire Bolts, eat one lobster… Cast six Fire Bolts, eat one lobster…

But the dragon didn’t have any lobsters.

Noooooooooooo! The five minute warning!

Should I move, and risk being attacked, or cast another spell, and risk being logged out?

I cast another Fire Bolt, hit 0, and got logged out.

I logged back in, cast another Fire bolt, and saw “Your opponent is retreating…” as the dragon disappeared.

Noooooooooooo! I had killed the dragon, but hadn’t gotten credit for it!

I hung around for a minute, just to collect the meager reward– dragon bones I couldn’t bury even if I wanted to.

Turned out the poor unfortunate had left me two law runes, not one. I used one to tele to Falador. (It’s good to be a mage…)

I wasn’t fried, but I surely was steamed. It wasn’t simply a matter of going to the bank to restock– I had sold all my lobsters but the ones I had saved to kill the dragon. I had to fish and cook another load before I could return.

On the first trip, I had brought runes to Curse the dragon, and had actually used them a couple times. For the second trip, I opted instead for more lobsters.

The first dragon had been waiting for me near the north end of the chamber. The second was waiting at the south end.

When the dragon was down to about half hp, I moved– I was taking no chances on the game logging me out again. In the process, I accidentally “Talked to” the dragon when I thought I was casting a Fire Bolt, so I ended up retreating twice. But the two moves together cost me only one lobster.

Cast six Fire Bolts, eat one lobster… Cast six Fire Bolts, eat one lobster…

The best part of having to kill the dragon again was that my friend Somber was able to be there the second time. Somber and I have been present at many a dragon slaying, as witnesses or participants. Somber is the babealicious one in the rune med behind me.

Oops… I had only brought boat fare for one passage. I sold a lobster to Somber for the return trip, and hiked to the dock. I had a hot date with Oziach…

…and with Thrander!
