Chapter 11: 80 Thieving
I did it again! I forgot to select Defensive fighting style, killed a Paladin whose pocket I had been picking, and gained an Attack level. Omegawytch is now 42 Combat.
And that wasn’t even my first mental lapse of the day!
As every mage knows, the worst part of training Magic is the time spent buying runes. After procrastinating for days, I had bitten the bullet the evening before and spent some time server-hopping, buying Air, Earth, and Fire runes. Now it was time for some fun. I withdrew 400 Chaos runes from Omegawytch’s ample stock, along with 400 each of the newly acquired Air and Earth runes, and my Air and Earth staves (or so I thought). I headed for the Necromancer’s house, to cast Crumble Undead (which gives the most XP per Chaos rune) on the unlimited level 24 Zombies which the Necromancer summons when attacked.
My plan was to cast half of the spells using Earth runes and the Air staff, then switch to the Earth staff for the other half. So I equipped the Air staff (or so I thought) and started shooting
I had gained a couple of levels when I was suddenly informed, “You don’t have all the reagents you need for this spell.”
I yelled something which can be loosely translated, for this polite, family-oriented message board, as “Doubleyou tee eff” and checked my inventory.
Instead of my Air staff, I had withdrawn and equipped a Magic staff.
I’ll never make that mistake again: For your information, casting the High Alchemy spell on a Magic staff gives you 120 GP.
I gained only two Magic levels, instead of the three I would have gained without my mental lapse. I had one consolation as I returned to Ardougne: I had acquired a Zamorak skirt, which adds 5 to Magic equipment. In addition to determining the effect of Gauntlets of Chaos on Bolt spells, I hope to determine with fair precision the effect of equipment (Wizard robes, Sapphire Amulet of Magic, element staff, and Zamorak skirt) on spells.
After wasting so many old runes, I had no stomach for buying more immediately, so I returned to Thieving. After adding quite a few names to the Long And Growing List Of People For Whom I Will Not Go Out Of My Way To Do Favors (LAGLOPFWIWNGOOMWTDF, for short) because they attacked the Paladin whose pocket I was picking, I gained a level…
The temptation was just too great: Abandoning the Paladin, I headed for the Hero.
I succeeded on my first attempt to pick the Hero’s pocket, receiving a Blood rune. I continued picking the Hero, returning to the bank for food (quicker than the Baker’s Stall) until I had completely exhausted my stores. For my efforts and the food, I obtained six jugs of Wine (which I drank as they came to me, to restore HP and keep Attack down), a dozen Death runes, seven Blood runes, two Fire Orbs, close to 30k GP, and over 38k Thieving XP.
And people still wonder why I don’t think kindly of people who train on Heroes and Paladins.
