Chapter 10: Slaying of Chronozon
Brain over brawn, again– belatedly!
Immediately after Scared2death and Omegawytch completed the Hero quest (entering the Guild at 31 and 41 combat, respectively), we planned to do the Family Crest quest together. No record would be set, by either of us: X U Out completed the quest at 27 combat nearly two months earlier, proving that a low-combat mage could complete the quest, and setting a record that will be difficult to beat. Even so, we both wanted to complete the quest, and obtain the Gauntlets which are the quest reward.
Scared2death and I were literally at Demintheis’s gate, ready to begin the quest, when Real Life interfered: I got a phone call. It proved to be a long one, and when I logged back in, Scared2death had succumbed to Real Life fatigue. He left me a Scapeboard PM, saying that after thinking it over, if we went together to fight Chronozon (the level 121 demon which must be slain to recover the final fragment of the Fitzharmon Family Crest), one of us would be wasting food, due to the Poison Spiders which swarm around the demon and the Obelisk of Earth. Wrote Scared, “If you wanna go ahead and do the quest feel free and Good Luck!”
So I went ahead with the two easy pieces (the level 114 Hellhound which guards the “perfect gold” rocks never even attacked me as I mined them). Then I went to the wilderness part of Edgeville Dungeon, fought Chronozon– and died.
To kill Chronozon, it’s necessary to cast all four Blast spells– Wind, Water, Earth, and Fire– on the demon. Omegawytch was only level 57 Magic, and Fire Blast requires at least level 59, so I had to use a Wizards Mind Bomb to temporarily boost the skill. I managed to get all four blast spells off, but when I retreated from Chronozon to eat I was poisoned by a spider, and the next time I retreated I drank Cure Poison instead of eating. That was a fatal mistake– Chronozon attacked again and sent Omegawytch to Lumbridge.
I went back with just rune plate, legs, and square, plus Law and Air runes, and rescued my Diamond Amulet of Power, Silverlight, Air Staff, Chaos runes, and the Super Defense potion I had been carrying throughout the Lost City and Hero quests, and which I never remembered to drink.
I telegrabbed these items while fighting a Poison Spider, and being poisoned. I then teleported to Varrock, withdrew a Cure Poison pot from the band, and drank it, stopping the poison’s effect with 12 hp left.
Only then did I realize how a mage fights Chronozon: She doesn’t.
A mage drinks a Poison Antidote; then, instead of fighting level 121 Chronozon, she fights a level 63 Poison Spider, while casting spells on the demon. Brain over brawn… Why didn’t I think of this earlier?
Omegawytch can’t make Poison Antidote– thanks to Darksavior69 and Vap137 for hooking me up!
Back in the dungeon, I drank Super D just past the thugs (taking my Defense temporarily to 74– w00t! Thanks, Shacoya! ), drank Poison Anti just before the level 54 Skeletons, engaged a Poison Spider, and retreated to drink a Wizards Mind Bomb. (Longer living through pharmaceuticals!) As the spider reattacked, I began maging Chronozon.
I cast Fire Blast first: “Cast spell successfully.” Yes! I followed with Earth, Water, and Wind Blasts, then started casting Fire Bolts. Chronozon didn’t make it easy; the demon was constantly moving, requiring me to change camera angle constantly with my left hand while casting spells with my right– all the while keeping an eye on my life bar. Sorry, no screen shots– I was busy!
But before long, I was able to cast one final spell:
I teleported to Varrock and Dimintheis to claim my coveted reward.
I hurried back to the Jolly Boar Inn, where Dimentheis’s magician son Jonathan enchanted the plain steel gauntlets, making them Gauntlets of Chaos. These are supposed to increase the damage done by Bolt spells. How much of an increase? No one has ever answered that question to my satisfaction. Do they also increase the damage done by the Crumble Undead spell, which also uses Chaos runes? Again, no answer– but Omegawytch, currently a level 78 thief with access to unlimited Chaos runes, is now as well equipped as anyone in Runescape to discover the answers.
The end of this story had to be scripted by Saradomin, or maybe Zamorak– I couldn’t make this up. I went back to the east Varrock bank, to be greeted by someone I had never before met in game, and whom I know only from message board posts.
