Chapter 6: Dragon Medium Buying
Omegawytch has her own Dragon Medium helmet. After spending a day fruitlessly trying to buy one with a combination of GP and other items, I spent much of Valentine’s day (US time) selling the items; more about this below. That evening, Angelfire00 and I agreed on a price (which is None Of Your Financial Business) and made the trade. I was so excited I forgot to make a screen shot until Angelfire00 was depositing the GP.
After making the deal in Edgeville, I returned to Ardougne, where the helm could be put to its primary purpose: Protection while picking Paladin pockets. Unsurprisingly, the appearance of a level 39 in a Drag Med was greeted with the predictable Doubleyou Tee Effs, Oh Emm Gees, and Oh Emm Eff Gees.
Some of the reactions were more entertaining. I was picking a Paladin in Zenesha’s Brass Bra Bazaar… er, Plate Mail Top Shop when Usmcman11 came in (not bothering to close the door) to comment, “Hmmmmmmmm… Something not quite right here… Freak…” Then he left (not bothering to close the door).
At the Baker’s Stall, someone whose name I didn’t catch said, “That’s just wrong.”
“What’s just wrong?” I asked. “Training Defense to 60 with low attack and strength? Working hard enough to be able to pay for a Drag Med?”
There was silence in Ardougne Square.
“Omega who ur main?” was a frequent question, clearly implying disbelief that a character with a mere 39 combat could earn enough GP to pay for a Drag Med. Even more frequent was, “Omega how u get so rich?”
In my Routine Matters! post, I explained how I intended to raise the money. The plan worked perfectly for the most part, but there were a few surprises.
I always intended Thieving to be Omegawytch’s main source of income, and Thieving in fact accounted for the biggest part of the purchase price: I stole well over half a million GP. I stole well over 400 Blood runes, which sell for 1000 GP apiece and up. Some I sold for 1000 GP, some I sold for up; the exact details are NOYFB. By the time I bought the helm, I had stolen nearly 2000 Chaos runes, which sell for 350 to 450 GP each. I sold 1500 of them; the exact details are NOYFB. I stole over 600 Nature runes. Surprise number one: I didn’t receive a single offer for them. To qualify for the Lost City, Family Crest, and Heros Quests, I needed to achieve 50 Mining, 40 Smithing, 53 Fishing, 53 Cooking, and 25 Herblaw, as well as minimums in Crafting and Woodcutting.
Meeting the Mining and Smithing left me with 100 steel bar certs, 40 iron ore certs, and a whole lot of silver bar certs.
Silver bar certs sell for 2000 to 3000 GP each, but I didn’t sell them; they went to my friend Loraxx, who generously supplied Omegawytch with Dragonstone and other amulets; the exact details are NOYFB.
Steel bar certs sell for 2500 to 3500 GP apiece, and iron bar certs sell for 500 GP apiece and up. I sold mine for prices in those ranges; the exact details are NOYFB.
Meeting the Fishing and Cooking requirements left me with 140 cooked lobster certs, which sell for 1000 to 2000 GP apiece, and 17 raw lob certs, which sell for 2000 GP apiece in large quantities, less for smaller. I sold mine for prices in those ranges; the exact details are NOYFB.
To meet the Crafting requirement, I did some of my Defense training on Cows and made leather armor; this made no significant contribution to the Drag Med fund. I also trained some on Chickens, and amassed 7500 feathers, which sell for 10 to 30 GP apiece. I sold mine for a price in that range; the exact details are NOYFB.
But I killed Man after Man after Man after Man after Man after Man after Man Man after Man after Man after Man after Man after Man after Man after level 9 Man for most of my Defense training, to gather the herbs necessary to meet the Herblaw requirement.
Men don’t drop herbs nearly as often as Chaos Druids– but I probably killed in the neighborhood of 8000 of them. I reached 25 Herblaw long before I reached 60 Defense, without ever having to mix a single Strength potion. And this is where the really big surprises came: By the time I reached 60 Defense, I had a large number of Ranarr and up, which sell for 2000 to 3000 GP each, and several hundred Tarromin and below, as well as several dozen Red Spider Eggs, any of which can sell for up to 1000 GP each. The exact details are NOYFB, but Omegawytch earned well over half a million GP selling these Herblaw items.
So Omegawytch had absolutely no need of any help from 56warrior in purchasing the Dragon Medium. In fact, Omegawytch still has well over half a million GP in the bank. How much over half a million? NOYFB, as you no doubt already realized.
In some respects, wearing the Dragon Medium hasn’t changed much at all. I still pick a Pal’s pocket 100 - 130 times before I need more cake. And the LAGLOPFWIWNGOOMWTDF continues to grow. But in addition to the predictable Doubleyou Tee Effs, Oh Emm Gees, and Oh Emm Eff Gees, the helm has led to some very pleasant interactions with other players. Intelligent questions and comments from Scotty Mac, Meangunz, and Joshthegod come to mind. The Paladin whose pocket I was picking caught Wogattack looting the Silver Stall several times; each time, Wogattack retreated after 2.5 rounds, allowing me to continue picking the Paladin. Darksaviour69, who generously loaned his Dragon Medium for the proof-of-performance screen shot, stopped by to see Omegawytch’s.
I met someone I think I’d like to get to know better: Thetruestr’s combat level is 5, but he’s a level 77 cook, with seven other stats showing on the Hiscores.
One Paladin led me past the Baker’s stall before I could greet Terrorsphere, whom I hadn’t seen in a long time, and Forceyou, who asked, “Omega, what’s next?” Greetz, guyz, and, Force, here’s your answer:
I still have to do the Lost City, Family Crest, and Heros Quests, and I really want to do them with Scared2death. We met briefly in the game a few days ago, and hope to be able to start doing the quests this week.
More thieving, of course: The business of selling items and buying the helm hasn’t kept Omegawytch from gaining a level each of the past three days.
Reaching 75 thieving opens two new possibilities for Omegawytch: The Gems Stall, which she has already looted a few times, and the Tree Gnomes, which she’ll probably try later today.
I’d like to express my thanks to Angelfire00 for selling me his helm, and to Lion23, Pop Diva, and my friend Routs for considering my offers for theirs.
Deep thanks to the players who helped me finance the purchase by buying items from me: Armagedon48, Athello, Axxlar, Aznpk, Devil25, Kinsman, Mage X Mage, Spark361, the distinguished looking gentleman dressed all in red (including a Party Hat) with the distinguished looking name which I’ve sadly forgotten, and my friends Shacoya Queen of Herbalists and His Reverence Swiss04 (670,000 Prayer XP - Oh Emm Eff Gee!).
Special thanks to Shadow_42, whose post about killing the dragon on o defense o was the direct inspiration for my doing so on Omegawytch. (Coincidentally, the day I bought the helm, I received a Scapeboard PM from Shadow_42, saying he’s thinking about a membership for o defense o. As I said in my reply to him, I haven’t regretted for a minute getting Omegawytch a membership. Defense and thieving go together like hand and glove… and for a mage, it makes a lot more sense to be PAID 80 GP for each Chaos rune you steal, and 250 GP for each Blood rune, and a few GP for each Nature, than to have to PAY FOR runes…) Special thanks also to Albosky, whose achievements with Scared2death were the direct inspiration for Omegawytch’s membership.
And without the common sense of Mystique777 and Loraxx I’d probably still be training defense by bashing sewer rats with a stick. After seeing me fighting the denizens of the Ardougne sewer with a Fire Staff, Mystique took time out from her own efforts to smith me an iron 2hander. And Loraxx reminded me– gently, but repeatedly, since I’m a slow learner– that I’d find the drops from level 9 Man much more useful in achieving my goals than Raw Rat Meat and bones I couldn’t even bury.
